This unique, refreshing beer appetizer is the result of amalgamating fresh strawberries with lambic during summer. They mature throughout the winter season. In spring, the strawberry lambic is bottled. In order to fully enjoy the taste and flavour of this appetizer, it is recommended to consume it within one year of bottling. Due to the typical characteristics of the fruit, the strawberry lambic is changing rapidly into a geuze lambic. Therefore, opposed to geuze or kriek, no blend is made of different aged lambics resulting in a lesser second fermentation and less carbon dioxide. Oude Geuze and Oude Kriek are as well very good appetizers and should be served with a cellar temperature. Oudbeitje is recommended to serve ice- chilled in a champagne glass.

Hanssens Gueuze is a blended lambic comes in a corked bottle, which gives a short, sharp hiss on opening. Pouring it produces a decent, bubbly head leaving a bit of lacework. It is fairly easy to pour clear at first, but we chose to add the yeast a little later. The aroma is typically dry, sour and barnyardy, with a heady mixture of subtle spices and stale socks. In the mouth it is very lemony and sherbety - like a lemon sherbet, in fact. Despite the sharp, sour lemon notes, this also has a little balancing touch of sweetness. Rubber inner-tube notes accompany the finish, leaving a clean, sharp, citrusy aftertaste with a lingering touch of cinnamon. Adding the yeast seems to result in a bitter bite in the mouth. A top-notch gueuze - perhaps a little more approachable than some of the more aggressively sour artisanal examples of the style.

Armand Debelder’s most special Kriek, brewed with Belgium’s famous Schaerbeekse cherries, renowned for their incredible color and flavor. Loads of these rare and expensive sour cherries, pits and all, are poured into aging casks of lambic, where they are gradually infused into the beer. The result is a delectable blend of sourness from the lambic and a slight hint of sweetness from the ridiculous quantity of cherries employed. Naturally, no sugars, sweeteners, or artifical flavors are used.
